Underlayment is used as an extra layer of protection. Depending on your location will also determine the kind of underlayment that is used on your roof. For example, if you’re in a geographical area where you get a lot of snow and rain, you will probably need a thicker underlayment and possibly would use a peel and stick to keep ice damns from creating issues.  There are quite a few different types of roof underlayment with different functions. When it comes to choosing the right underlayment for your job, please use our “compare products” feature to get the product’s specs and functionality before making a purchase.

There are three main types of roof underlayment. First, and the most commonly used by roofers today is a synthetic underlayment.  This product is much lighter with greater coverage, more durable, easier to walk on, and has better UV stability while the roof is exposed and waiting for shingles.  Second is your standard asphalt-saturated felt. This was the most commonly used underlayment until about 15 years ago.  And last would be a rubberized peel and stick underlayment used for some high temp applications but most commonly as an ice and water guard.

Asphalt saturated underlayment for many years has been considered a staple in the world of weather barriers. While there are many benefits to this product, there are also many pit falls.  It is heavy, tears easy, and tends to become hard to work with once it gets wet.  The high temperature rated underlayment is a great weather barrier option for metal, tile, and slate roofs, which can produce more heat than other roofing systems. It can also be used under traditional shingles for superior protection. Certain high temp underlayment can also help to protect against water and ice dams.  The Peel and stick underlayment is not only convenient, it is also exceptionally strong and tear resistant. This top-of-the-line weather barrier performs well in both low and high temperatures, ranging from -40° F to 260° F (-40° C to 126° C).
