Let’s Get Specific: How To Install A Bathroom Vent Fan

Are you thinking about taking on a DIY project such as installing your own bathroom vent? If so, it is important to understand the steps you have to follow, no matter what type of bathroom vent you are going to be using. What are a few important steps to keep in mind? Cut the Hole

The first thing you need to do is cut a hole in the ceiling based on the size of the bathroom fan you are going to be using. You should mark the location of your fan by inserting a nail into the drywall. Then, locate the nails in the attic. Mark the location clearly with a pencil. After this, you should use a drywall saw or a reciprocating saw to cut the plaster or drywall from the ceiling. 

Slide the Fan Into Place

The next thing you need to do is light the fan into place. You need to attach the fan to the joist using a set of screws. You may need to push back the insulation. Make sure there is a gap of at least 6 in between the insulation and the bathroom fan. You need to use wooden boards to block the fan from the insulation to ensure that it works properly. 

Create a Hole in the Roof

Of course, you need to create a hole in the roof as well. You should drill a hole that is large enough for the roof vent. You should cut out a circle using a reciprocating saw, a keyhole saw, or a saber saw. Remove the shingles from the area around the vent. Make sure you do not damage the roof paper underneath. 

Install the Roof Vent

Now that there is a gap in place, you can install a roof vent. You need to slide the top flange of the vent underneath the shingles. Make sure the bottom flange is resting on the shingles themselves. You should apply adhesive to the bottom of the flanges in order to seal them in place. You should use roofing nails to secure the vent to the shingles. Make sure you have shingles on the sides of the roof vent. You may need to apply roofing cement in order to seal the joint using the shingles. 

Connect the Fan

The next step is to actually connect the bathroom fan. Every fan is slightly different; however, you should use flexible duct tape to keep the clamps in place. You may need to wrap a joint with duct tape as well. After this, you need to take a look at the wiring accompanying the bathroom fan. You may need to run cable to the fan if there is no wiring present. Follow the instructions provided with the bathroom fan. That way, you know the bathroom fan will work well when you turn it on.
