The extension is needed for connecting flexible duct, but it can also be used for solid pipe as long as there is enough room for any elbows or adapters that might be needed. They solid pipes are usually attached using self-tapping screws and foil tape.

The vent itself appears to be well made. The bug/pest screen left alot to be desired. It would not stay in place because of the minimal channel for pushing onto the vent housing. So I made my own out of more ridgid material.
