No, this product was not designed or intended to be used as an intake vent. We have one here that would work for your intended application.
The RDP Hooded Wall Vent can not be used in that application. It is designed to be used for wall mounted applications only.
The RDP Hooded Wall Vent is designed to be used as a bath and kitchen exhaust vent. The screen and shape of the vent could cause lent to clog it.
The RDP Hooded Wall Vent has a light spring, the 50 CFMs should be plenty to open the damper.

Received my wall vent today after being shipped the wrong item, but customer service was great and immediately sent me the correct item. I was surprised that the screen was only a tension fit. No problem, I drilled holes in the flange and put four pop rivets to hold it in place against a "squirrel attack." You might consider having pre-drilled holes and provide small sheet metal screws so the screen could be easily removed, but still secure.
