Pipe Flashing, an important part of your roof system.

In the world of roofing, it’s safe to say that we all understand the importance of choosing the right products for our roofs – Shingles, underlayment, drip edge, vents – the works! One product that is easy to overlook in this process is pipe flashing. With so many options on the market, it can be tough to know which one will be the best for your next job. We want to make it as easy as possible. Let’s go over some of the styles and types out there to make it a bit less daunting.

All-metal FHA Style Pipe Flashing
Metal pipe flashings are a highly durable option, as they do not contain any materials that might be prone to weathering or breaking down over time. Typically, these flashings are constructed out of a sturdy galvanized steel. This makes them one of the most “bullet-proof” options that money can buy. Just don’t go testing that theory with a 12 gauge – Neighbors don’t tend to look too kindly on it. FHA style pipe flashings feature a large metal flange that is perfect for layering with shingles to prevent leakage. The top opening can be sealed to the pipe with silicone, and a storm collar can also be added for extra protection. Since these are all-metal and are not adjustable like rubber collared flashings, you’ll need to know your pipe diameter and purchase the corresponding size. They come in various pitch options as well. You can purchase flat pitch built for a flat roof, a low pitch option good for a 3/12-6/12 pitch, or a steep pitch option that works for a 7/12-12/12 pitch. If you have a Type B or multi wall pipe, we’ve got sizing options for that as well.

No-Caulk Style Pipe Flashing
The “No-Caulk” style pipe flashing has been one of the most popular on the market for many years. This is because it is so easy to use. These pipe flashings come with a large metal base for layering with shingles, and a rubber collar that is adjustable to both size and pitch, up to an 8/12 pitch. Most often, the rubber collars come with tear-off tabs that allow you to puncture and tear the rubber to meet the pipe size. They can be purchased in a 1.25”-3” size, and a 3”-4” size which are the most common roof pipe sizes. Many roofers and plumbers prefer this because you can use one pipe flashing for multiple pipe terminations on the roof without having to worry that it isn’t going to fit. The rubber collar also provides a unique feature in that it creates its own waterproof seal around the pipe by stretching tightly around it. This eliminates the need to use messy roofing caulk to seal the opening. These pipe flashings are also available for solar mounting systems.

Master Flash Pipe Flashing
The Master Flash pipe flashing is made to be used on multiple types of roof surfaces. This includes tile, rubber membrane, metal and even plastic. The most common use for this flashing is on a profiled metal roof, since the base is flexible and can fit around the ridges of the metal. The base is made to form a seal on any type of panel configuration. This flashing can also be used with any roof pitch. This is a versatile and flexible pipe flashing is made of EPDM rubber, which makes it durable against weathering and cracking up to 275°. The Master Flash comes in multiple base and pipe diameter size options, making it quite possibly the easiest product in your next corrugated roofing job.

Residential Zip-Seal Retrofit Pipe Flashing
The Zip-Seal pipe flashing, also known as a retrofit pipe flashing, is typically used in a re-roof application around an electrical mast. These pipe flashings are made of a flexible rubber that is easy to close around the electrical mast using a pair of pliers. The rubber construction also allows this flashing to be mess-free, as it does not need caulk to create a seal.

Cricket Pipe Flashing
The CricketPipe Flashing is a wonderful product for snowy areas, as its angular design splits the snow and protects the pipe underneath. This is why it is sometimes called a “snow splitter” pipe flashing.  It is designed to be used on a 3/12-8/12 pitched roof, which is the most common pitch range for snowy climate roofs. The large flange and all metal construction make for easy installation and superior leak protection.
