How To Properly Fasten Your Copper Roof Appliance

If you are planning on adding appliances to your home’s roof, then you have to make sure you do this properly. This means including copper flashing; however, you need to make sure that you use the right fasteners. This means select in your nails properly. If you do not fasten your roof appliances correctly, then they could end up getting blown away in a severe storm. Or, they could be a source of a major roof leak. How can you prevent this from happening? There are a few important tips to keep in mind.

Use the Right Nails: Select Copper Nails

When you secure copper flashing to your home’s roof, you have to select the right nails. In general, you have three options. They include copper, stainless steel, and galvanized nails.

When you select your nails, you have to think about corrosion. Copper nails are the most resistant to corrosion. Therefore, you should use these when you can. If you are in a pinch, you may be able to get away with stainless steel nails; however, they are not nearly as durable as copper nails.

In general, you should avoid galvanized nails because they are not resistant to corrosion. Of course, your roof is going to be exposed to rain from time to time. You need your nails to resist corrosion. Otherwise, this is going to leave your roof susceptible to a serious leak.

Tips for Installing Roof Appliances

If you are installing roof appliances, you have to make sure you do this properly. Otherwise, you are simply going to find yourself back at the same job, fixing issues that might have developed. For example, you need to make sure you have the right equipment. This includes a hammer, a screw gun, a caulk gun, a utility knife, and a hole saw. Make sure you have the best equipment possible to make this job as easy as possible.

When you begin installing a roof appliance, make sure you mark around the roof vent. That way, you know where you’ll be cutting. You should use a box cutter to cut the shingles around the marking. That way, you know your roof vent is going to go into place.

Even though it may sound like an extra step, you always have to caulk the old nail holes. Caulking these holes is important because it will prevent moisture from getting in the holes. After this, you can nail the shingles back into place once the appliance has been installed.

Finally, you should always use insulated piping. If you do not insulate your piping, moisture is going to build up quickly. This is particularly important in areas that have harsh winters, because otherwise the snow will melt and the water will get in the pipes.
