Starter Shingles

New products coming soon!

The Starter shingles are the first row of shingle products that you would install.  These are hidden under the first course of the architectural shingles, which is the shingle that remains visible. Since that first row of architectural shingles doesn’t have a shingle below it to protect the seams, the starter shingles act as that barrier. When installing a new roof, there are a number of components used that are under the shingle.  These components are crucial and play a very important role in the roof’s ability to shed water and protect your home from the elements. One of these important components to your roofs system is the starter shingle.

It is recommended that you run your starter shingle around the entire roof’s perimeter.  Some code states it need to be installed only on the bottom eaves, but according to many professionals, there are benefits to installing it up the rake edges to complete the entire perimeter.

A couple of the benefits would include. First, to provide a nice straight line to cut the shingles up the rake on.  This will keep it from looking jagged and give it a cleaner appearance. Second, running the starter shingles up the rake edge, should help with preventing blow-offs. Most starter shingles will have a tar strip that stick to the shingles above it, which will help reduce the chances of blow-off.   If you have any other questions about shingles or recommended installation practices, please contact us and one of our team members will be happy to help.
